- Wantage Rural District, which had its headquarters in Belmont, Wantage and,
- Wantage Urban District, which had its headquarters in Portway.

These bodies were both abolished as part of the Local Government Act 1972 with the formation of Wantage Town Council and Vale of White Horse District Council.
Mayors are elected each Civic Year, from within, and by, the 16 Town Councillors at the Annual Council Meeting which is held every May.
