Town Mayor’s Statement HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

The Town Mayor, Town Councillors and Council Staff wish to express their sadness on the passing on 9th April 2021 of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, KG, KT, OM, GBE, AK, QSO, PC.

All Wyvern flags on the flagpoles in the Market Place have been replaced by the Union Flag, which will be flown at half-mast throughout the period of mourning.  All static flags around the Market Place have black mourning drapes applied.

Following guidance from the Oxfordshire Lieutenancy, while under COVID restrictions, we are discouraging the laying of floral tributes.  Should you wish to contribute in some way, the Duke of Edinburgh Award would welcome additional support to help young people emerge from the lockdown successfully.  Details are available at www.dofe.org/donate/

When there is a period of National Mourning, normal Town Council meetings are cancelled or postponed, hence the Annual Town Electorate meeting due to be held on Monday 12th April is postponed to Monday 19th April 2021.

On Saturday 17th April, the Funeral Day, at 15:00 hours there will be a one minute silence led by the Town Mayor in the Market Place. Due to COVID restrictions members of the public are NOT encouraged to attend the Silence.  It will be broadcast on Facebook.

During COVID-19 there will only be an online Wantage Book of Condolences which is here.

The National Book of Condolences is here.
