Town Mayor’s Statement Her Majesty The Queen

The Town Mayor, Town Councillors and Council Staff wish to express their sadness on the passing on 8th September 2022 of Her Majesty Queen ELizabeth II.

All  flags on the flagpoles in the Market Place have been replaced by a single Union Flag, which will be flown at half-mast throughout the period of mourning during the hours of daylight.  All static flags around the Market Place have been removed.

The Mayor is liaising with the Oxfordshire Lieutenancy, over the events that will occur during this period of National Mourning and we will update this post accordingly.

When there is a period of National Mourning, normal Town Council meetings are cancelled or postponed.

The Proclamation of Accession by the Mayor will occur in the Market Place on Sunday 11th September 2022.  All are asked to be present by 13:45 hours.  The Wantage Silver Band will play a set of sombre pieces immediately following and the Parish Church will attempt a Quarter Peal of 6 bells at around 15:00 hours.  Details of the State Funeral will be published when we know them. It is hoped that these local events will be broadcast on Facebook.

In addition to the physical Books of Condolences that are placed around the Town, The Beacon and Parish Church of SS Peter and Paul,  there is an Online Book of Condolences here.

The National Book of Condolences is also available to sign.
